Fundamentals of Rosé Fizzics

Some tasting notes on Rosé champagnes and Rosé sparkling wines:

*Please note, the Vintage Rosé Champagne prices are approximate and fluctuate with supply and demand. These are meant to give a “flavor” of the approximate prices only. (reflecting 750ml bottles).

Remember: most Rosé champagnes are dry (not sweet), are delicious and excellent, high quality wines that go very well with food.

Most rosé champagnes do not improve with aging, with the exceptions of the very finest vintage ones. Thus, the majority are to be consumed in their youth…aka right now!

These tasting notes are compiled from various sources based upon the 100 point scale. Of course, you are the best judge of what you like.
This list is incomplete and serves only to help you gain a quick perspective on the range and flavors of Rosé champagnes and Rosé sparkling wines.

Vintage Rosé Champagnes

(a vintage means all grapes harvested in same year)

*The preeminent Rosé champagnes

1. Billecart-Salmon Cuvée Elisabeth Salmon Brut Rosé Millésimé 2000 $150 Refined and elegant, with lovely depth and richness in its fragrant fruit. The 2000 Elisabeth Salmon is weightier than the NV Brut Rose yet everything is simply in the right place. This is a gorgeous, wonderfully expressive Champagne from Billecart-Salmon that is even more impressive than it was last year. (93) Wine Advocate

Bollinger Grande Annee Rosé 2002 $230 This rosé Champagne shows precision, balance and seamless integration, boasting juicy fruit flavors of ripe black cherry, pomegranate and cassis that mix with violet, spice, almond and candied citrus peel notes. Fresh and vibrant, with a long, lightly spiced finish. (94) Wine Spectator

Charles Heidsieck, Brut Millesime 1999 Rosé $75 Showing signs of toasty maturity. Rosé Champagne does age but it becomes much more like regular (white) Champagne. There are only just hints of red fruits as a reminder of its youthful character. The wine though remains delicious. (89) Wine Spectator

Dom Pérignon Rosé 2000 $350 A beautifully balanced wine, with bitter cherries in a core of dry toast. It is already mature, its freshness transformed into a rich texture. Like many rosé Champagnes, this is made for food. (94) Wine Enthusiast

Dom Pérignon Oenothèque Rosé 1990 $700 The exact same blend as 1990 Dom Pérignon Rosé, the Œnothèque has spent ten more years on its lees (disgorgement 2007). Rosé yet amber in color; a glorious and intriguing expression of Pinot Noir beyond the commitment to the perfect blend,“as languorous and silky as a guitar solo by Carlos Santana”, its voluptuousness expressing itself through layers of spices and exotic fruits. www. richardgeoffroy-domperignon.com/dom-perignon-rose-oenotheque

Gosset, Extra Brut Rosé 2003 $200 This is dry and packed with cherry, currant and spice flavors. There's a firm structure, tart even, contrary to a vintage low in acidity. As a result, the finish is a bit austere. (87) Wine Spectator

Jacquesson Signature Rosé 1995 $125 More spice and hard candy notes here than fruit, with a sharp, malic acidity coating the gums. Overall it shows intensity and good flavors. (89) Wine Spectator

Laurent-Perrier Rose Cuvee Alexandra Grand Siecle 1998 $450 This seems to be developing rapidly, with maturing notes of toast, smoke and spice complementing dried cherry and currant flavors. Creamy and intense, lingering on the finish. (91) Wine Spectator

Pommery, Louise Brut Rosé 2000 $390 Good grip supports the light toast, spice and dried berry flavors. Dry and firm on the finish, this could use a little more intensity. (88) Wine Spectator

Taittinger, Comtes de Champagne Rosé, 2004 $280 A rich rosé Champagne, displaying lots of toast and brioche to accent the flavors of black cherry, plum, roasted nuts and spice. This is elegant and balanced, despite its richness, with a refined texture and a fresh, smoke-tinged finish. (91) Wine Spectator

Non-Vintage Rosé Champagnes

(Grapes are harvested in different years)

Alfred Gratien, Cuvée Paradis Brut Rosé NV Onion-skin color leads to a wine that is packed with deep fruit flavors. Considerably dry but a great food wine, with good acidity and ability to age well in bottle. The sample tasted was too young, and needed at least a year’s aging. (90) Wine Enthusiast

Billecart-Salmon Brut Rosé NV A bone-dry but delicious wine, with red fruits and a beautiful onion-skin color that just hints at rosé. Lovely acidity completes the serious and highly enjoyable wine (92) Wine Enthusiast

Bollinger Brut Rosé NV Beautifully pale in color, this is serious rosé. Its rich and dry character and its red cherry and raspberry flavors are tied together by the finest acidity. Like most Bollinger Champagnes, this needs food.(91) Wine Enthusiast
Non-Vintage Rosé Champagnes cont.
4. Bruno Paillard Rosé Brut Première Cuvée NV An attractively crisp wine, its fruit on the dry side, with currants and the freshest pink grapefruit juice. This is a great food wine (91) Wine Enthusiast

5. Charles Heidsieck, Brut Rosé Reserve NV The aromas are of smoky bottle age and this translates into the flavors, with a light rancio character giving complexity to a finely made, rich, raspberry-flavored wine. It is full-bodied in the Charles Heidsieck style, a definite food wine. (92) Wine Enthusiast

Champagne Delamotte Brut Rosé NV Light-bodied, with tangy cassis, tangerine and Gala apple notes and a creamy mousse. There's a hint of fresh earth on the juicy finish. (87) Wine Enthusiast

De Margerie, Grand Cru NV Brut Rosé An elegant Grand Cru Rose made from a blend of 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay, it is crisp and light, with a red fruit bouquet and pink hue. The palate is filled with red fruit, and tiny bubbles that glide across the tongue, melting into long, pleasing finish.(wineaccess.com )

Deutz, Rosé Brut NV Ripe, full raspberry and red cherry flavors on a delicate pink-colored wine. Crisp and dry, this shows an intense and lively acidity along with lime juice intensity. An apéritif style, very fresh. (89) Wine Enthusiast

Duval-Leroy, Rosé de Saignée Brut NV A rare rosé made by obtaining the color from the skins of the Pinot during maceration, rather than by adding red wine. It gives a rich style of rosé with full red fruit flavors and a touch of tannin. This is definitely a food-friendly rosé (91) Wine Enthusiast

10. Duval-Leroy, Brut Rosé NV Finely balanced, crisp and clean, a pure delight. The wine has a delicious swathe of fresh strawberry and pink grapefruit, in a style that is wine-y, ready for food. The final acidity is soft, but always fresh. (91) Wine Enthusiast
11. G.H. Mumm, Brut Rosé NV Attractive strawberry flavors give this bright wine both softness and richness. It has a light bitter cherry character and balancing acidity, while finishing softly. (87) Wine Enthusiast

Gosset, Celebris Brut Grand Rosé NV A perfect salmon shade, with scents of peaches, cherries and toast. It hits the palate with big, ripe, fresh fruit: crisp apples, peaches, cherries and citrus. Concentrated and full, with a tart, fresh back end that lingers into a cherry-vanilla finish. (90) Wine Enthusiast

Heidsieck & Co Monopole, Rosé Brut NV In the pink realm of rosé, this soft and creamy wine has some bottle age to calm the freshness. The flavors are of red currant and raspberry juice, but the overall feel is of a sweeter character, shown in the final acidity. (87) Wine Enthusiast

Henriot, Rosé NV The discrete Henriot labeling is echoed in this elegant wine. Like so many Henriot Champagnes it has good bottle age, shows toast as well as light red fruits. There is a depth of flavor here, the texture of yeasty mousse and apple skins going right through the taste. Ready to drink, but worth aging.(93) Wine Enthusiast

Jacquart, Mosaïque Brut Rosé NV A ripe, fruity wine that takes its raspberry flavor from the color. The wine has softness, a creamy character that rounds out any acidity, leaving a smooth, fruity finish. (86) Wine Enthusiast
Non-Vintage Rosé Champagnes cont.
16. Jacquesson et Fils, Brut Rosé NV Pale salmon-pink color, with soft fruit, caramel and vanilla flavors and sweet strawberries at its core. A well-balanced, simple and attractive wine. (86) Wine Enthusiast

Joseph Perrier Cuvée Royal Rose NV Whole-grain toast and malt notes lend more bass to this full-bodied, cherry- and rhubarb-inflected rosé. Distinctive and rich, with a firm finish. (88) Wine Enthusiast

Krug, NV Rosé Krug Rosé has always been seen as the food rosé without rival. And so it remains. The secret is in the richness of the fruit, the layers of toastiness and the concentration of flavors. Fruit is there, but mature toastiness is more important in this wine, which layers acidity, and ripe fruit along with great style. (95) Wine Enthusiast

La Caravelle, NV Brut Rosé has always This beautiful salmon pink champagne uses the same base blend as out Niña with the addition of elegant red wines from well-known appellations such as Äy and Bouzy. With a floral and red berry bouquet, the rosé evokes hints of cherry almond, pomegranate and fennel. (lacaravelle.com)

Lanson, Rosé Brut NV The very pale copper color is a bit deceiving, because the cherry flavors are vivid and fresh, combining elegantly with herb and pastry-crust nuances. Finishes strong, echoing with pie cherries and slightly bitter herbs. (87) Wine Enthusiast

Laurent Perrier, Rosé Brut NV This poised and polished effort offers plenty of forward fruit and spicy power, a confident midpalate range of fresh fruits, and a good yeasty finish with a kiss of butterscotch for good measure. Perfectly delightful, with plenty of depth. (92) Wine Enthusiast

Non-Vintage Rosé Champagnes cont.
22. Moët et Chandon Brut Rosé Imperial NV Rather fruity, with scents of cherries and peaches that come together in a round, easy-to-drink style. A little simple perhaps, but this is a clean, fresh sparkler that won't disappoint.(87) Wine Enthusiast

Montaudon, Grande Rosé Brut NV A pretty, salmon-colored wine, it starts off with scents of strawberry, hay and earth, with just a whiff of cinnamon spice as well. There’s a good focus to the mid-palate, with rich cherry flavors mingled with tobacco and spice. Surprising length and concentration follow through into an unmistakable cherry tobacco flavor in the finish. Distinctive and good. (88) Wine Enthusiast

Nicolas Feuillatte, Rosé Brut NV Solid and flavorful, this opens with dry, rose-petal aromas, and is medium-full in body with good texture and acidity, berry and consomme flavors. Good complexity; just the faintest hint of sweetness appears on the long finish. (90) Wine Enthusiast

Paul Georg, Premier Cru Rosé NV A fascinating salmon pink-color, with a rare and elegant taste tinged with character. This thoroughbred style of Champagne is essentially due to the preponderance of Chardonnay, balanced by 10 to 15 % of black grapes, vinified as red wine. (89) Wine Spectator
26. Perrier-Jouët, NV 'Blason de France' Rosé A grand bottle of pink Champagne, round and luscious. The flavors come on like a cherry cordial, with exceptional Pinot Noir character and finesse. It is a seductive, elegant and textured wine that shows a level of detail and length that only the finest examples achieve. Subtle but very rewarding. (93) Wine Enthusiast

Philipponnat, NV Brut Reserve Rosé Bravo to Philipponnat for indicating both the vintage that is the base of this blend (2006) and the date of disgorgement of the bottle (September 2008). It should be standard practice. The wine is full, very wine-like in the house style, but retaining plenty of freshness. This fine rosé will improve for another six months. (90) Wine Enthusiast

28. Piper-Heidsieck, NV Brut Rosé A beautiful russet-copper color, this seductive rosé opens with a spicy nose of cranberry and baked apples, with just a whiff of SO2 still discernable. Fine, ripe, crisply defined cherry and sassafras flavors fill the midpalate, lingering into a tangy, refreshing finish. (91) Wine Enthusiast

Piper-Heidsieck, NV Brut Rosé Sauvage Vividly pink, like crushed strawberry, this exuberant wine is—as its name suggests—on the dry end of the spectrum. The acidity is dominant, but it is balanced and there are vivid red currant flavors, and a texture of tight fruit skins. (90) Wine Enthusiast

Pommery, Brut Rosé NV Quite seductive, with clear widespread appeal. It offers vanilla and peach aromas that draw a smile, while the ripe citrus and apricot flavors are really exact and tasty. Finishes with clever spice notes. Explosive throughout. Will age nicely for several years. (91) Wine Enthusiast

Ruinart, Rosé NV A mature, beautifully balanced wine, with great fresh raspberry and red currant flavors. It is rich, dense, balancing toast, yeast and fresh fruit. With its dry edge, think of this as a food wine. (91) Wine Enthusiast
Non-Vintage Rosé Champagnes cont.
32. Soutiran, Brut Rosé Grand Cru NV Very pure in the mouth, this food-friendly rosé is rich, on the dry side, with flavors of crushed strawberries and lemon juice, tightened by a red apple skin texture. The wine is fresh, but has an attractive edge of developing maturity. (91) Wine Enthusiast

Taittinger, 'Cuvee Prestige' Rosé NV A lightly creamy rosé, this wine merely hints at, rather than broadcasts, its component flavors. Everything is in balance, but oddly pale—the fruit could be anything, and the wine itself seems a bit dumbed down. But nothing is off, and it finishes spicy and refreshing. (88) Wine Enthusiast

Tarlant Rosé Brut NV Like an aged Volnay with bubbles, this offers sweet cherry and berry fruit, with a touch of autumn leaf and truffle. It has a refined mousse and mellow character right through the long finish. Drink now through 2012." (92) Wine Spectator

Tarlant Rosé Zero NV without dosage (no sugar added) Is an invitation to revel in the most explosive of pink champagnes, redolent with the natural flavours of fruits and spices. The contemporary elegance of the bottle, the rarity of zero sugar dosage and the generosity of the emotions it produces makes it a unique pink champagne. (tarlant.com)

36. Veuve Clicquot, Rosé NV This seems drier than its stablemate, the famous Yellow Label, and is the better for it. There is an urgent freshness here, driven by red currants and tight plum skin flavors. It is lively but full in the mouth, and shows just the right bottle age. (91) Wine Enthusiast

87. SOUTH AFRICA Pierre Jourdan NV Belle Rosé 100% Pinot Noir. Belle Rose has the faintest tinge of salmon pink, a lively presentation of Pinot Noir flavours, a pleasing fine mousse and it reveals an elegant dry finish. The discreet blush of Belle Rose, achieved by carbonic maceration (internal berry fermentation), is emphasized in the name the "beautiful rose". This process extracts the elegant colour and the flavours of the Pinot Noir grape, but not the harsh tannins, maintaining a distinguished dry elegance. (bottlenotes.com)

AUSTRIA Szigeti Brut Rosé NV A soft, creamy rosé sparkler, made by the traditional method, giving a light mousse, with suggestions of strawberries and a gentle, lightly acid aftertaste. (85) Wine Enthusiast
